چکیده
Background: Pneumococci have developed multiple strategies to infect the host. Results: PepO is ubiquitously expressed pneumococcal protein that interacts with host proteins and facilitates host cell invasion and evasion of innate immunity. Conclusion: PepO is a plasminogen and fibronectin binding pneumococcal invasin. Significance: Understanding the mechanism of pneumococcal interaction with host aids designing better therapeutical strategies and gaining control over the pathogen.

Streptococcus pneumoniae endopeptidase O (PepO) is a multifunctional plasminogen- and fibronectin-binding protein, facilitating evasion of innate immunity and invasion of host cells.
Streptococcus pneumoniae infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therefore a detailed understanding and characterization of the mechanism of host cell colonization and dissemination is critical to gain control over this versatile pathogen. Here we identified a novel 72-kDa pneumococcal protein endopeptidase O (PepO), as a plasminogen- and fibronectin-binding protei...
متن کاملStreptococcus pneumoniae Endopeptidase O (PepO) Elicits a Strong Innate Immune Response in Mice via TLR2 and TLR4 Signaling Pathways
Interaction between virulence factors of Streptococcus pneumoniae and innate immune receptors elicits host responses through specific signaling pathways during infection. Insights into the signaling events may provide a better knowledge of the starting events for host-pathogen interaction. Here we demonstrated a significant induction of innate immune response elicited by recombinant S. pneumoni...
متن کاملC-reactive protein enhances immunity to Streptococcus pneumoniae by targeting uptake to Fc gamma R on dendritic cells.
C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant with roles in innate host defense, clearance of damaged cells, and regulation of the inflammatory response. These activities of CRP depend on ligand recognition, complement activation, and binding to FcgammaR. CRP binds to phosphocholine in the Streptococcus pneumoniae cell wall and provides innate defense against pneumococcal infection. These...

Objective(s): The periodic binding of protein expressed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv with the host cell receptor molecules i.e. fibronectin (Fn) is gaining significance because of its adhesive properties. The genome sequencing of M. tuberculosis H37Rv revealed that the proline-glutamic (PE) proteins contain polymorphic GC-rich repetitive sequences (PGRS) which have clinical importance i...

Alpha (alpha)-enolase (e), a glycolytic enzyme, has an alternative role as a surface receptor of several bacteria mediating plasminogen (pg) binding. It is also recognized as a virulence factor of some pathogenic bacteria facilitating plasminogen activation and host cell invasion. A mycoplasmal alpha-enolase is also a plasminogen binding protein. Molecular interactions of enolase from Mycoplasm...
